  1. I see you are really interested in music and you have a lot of proof to back you up. Have you promoted music on New media? If you do, i guess the whole class would like to see it. I enjoy music but my music would not be of anyone's taste.
Aside from that, knowing that there are other sites to spread music is exciting!

  2. I have not promoted any music on New Media yet.
I have a band and we are currently making some originals at the moment. Once it is done, we will put it up.

Well, everyone has their own taste of music. But nevertheless music gets everyone connected in a way or another.

    Cheers!

  3. I think the most popular and effective way of promoting music is through youtube. I had seen many people doing covers for songs. Some even got famous. I even think that publishing in youtube is faster to get famous than joining competition. but of course, talent and looks are the key factors. But because of these platforms, the cases of illegal downloading may increase. people may share links on where the songs can be downloaded. I hope that someone can come up with a way to protect the singers' music and works. by yanpeng.

  4. Wow thats something new...this is a interesting way to promote personal music through the internet and it is cost free. People can also get comments about their songs by people around the world and how to improve. This really even better than entering compeitions and getting comments with just a few judges even though they are professionals - By Rui Yong

  5. You have shared a collection of sites where aspiring musicians can share their music. Do provide us with some analysis of which sites are better, and/or compare them such new media ways of promotion with the more traditional ways of getting discovered.

You have quite a number of links here - do incorporate them more seamlessly into the post. What about other readings/research you did? Could you share those with us as well?

  6. Interesting,Rootmusic is something I've never heard of before. I do know that myspace is very popular among aspiring musicians. I do have friends who upload their originals there for free listening. I believe its a gd platform for musicians to share their music on myspace rather than other websites. youtube is another option but its too wide of a range than in myspace as its heavily focused on the music world right? for you, a musician yourself, which site among all those do you prefer? - Rozaidi

  7. I agree on what you've mentioned new media has really been a great help to people who wants to share their music and get some advice from people on how to improve it and whether it's nice or not. - LEO

  8. Its great that there are so many platforms to share music now. But before anyone does that they also have to be a bit 'thick skinned' as there are bound to be flamers and people who are just bent on bringing you down.

  9. Yanpeng : you're right that youtube is a fast way to get recognize rather than competitions. You don't have to worry of the illegal downloads in these platforms because it is safe. They would ask if you would either let others 'download', 'buy', or 'share' the track.

Rui Yong : yeap, competition and being judged by judges can be at times quite discouraging. The best is to get them uploaded on the internet to let others have a view of you and comment, be it good or bad.

Rozaidi : yes Myspace is very popular. But for me personally, I don't really like using Myspace; but it's still a good platform. I would prefer to use Rootmusic + Facebook + Twitter.
Rootmusic is more user-friendly to me,and once I get my songs upoaded on Rootmusic, I can just add them to my Facebook account; and then using Twitter I can just follow whoever I want and start promoting my music by sharing the links to my music profile.

Leo : Yes, the comments from New Media can be very encouraging or discouraging. We should all take these comments; be it good or bad, maturely. Comments is one the very good ways to improve ourselves.

Adeeb : Yes we need to be 'thick skinned'. We all know that all these haters have no life wanting to bring us down. They can't even be in the position we're in now; to create music we want. Most of them are probably just jealous. Who cares? Comments build us up and makes us want to improve more.

    Cheers!

  10. i am impressed with your passion for music and your knowledge of so many local musicians i never even heard before. However i have a question. Is there a risk that so many people will use the new media to promote their home-made music, that in the future, making your own music and posting it online will get a response like:Oh, nice music.i know 1,000 other people who can do the same thing as you.then the web becomes not a place to showcase talent a place but to listen music

  11. Some people have passion for music and dream to be a singer. So promoting music on new media is one way of getting yourself recognize if you are lucky and also a way to improve yourself by allowing others to comment on you.

  12. Music is something that needs no explanation.

You've shared with us quite alot of examples and sites that potential talents showcase themselves. But personally, if you have a video or a soundtrack on hand, which platform or which site would you most prefer to post your files on? would it be youtube? facebook? or myspace? or anything that you know of?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Wei Jie : I understand what you're trying to say, and I can agree to your question. In fact, there are so many bands/artist you cant even imagine the amount. Music keeps going on and on. So yes the web can be said to listen to music; at the same time it showcase their talents allowing you to be interested in the band/artist depending on your preferences.

Yibing : Yes! Sometimes it depends on luck otherwise individual talent. I agree with you saying that comments will help improve ourselves to want to become better at what we do.

Royston : I would prefer Facebook for Videos as you can be able to let your friends watch it and thus spreading the love, slowly from there proceed to posting it up on YouTube.
If say a soundtrack, get it up on RootMusic and post them to your Facebook profile to let others listen to it.
I wouldn't recommend Myspace personally because Myspace is 'dying'. Facebook is so much convenient and easy and everyone is getting onto Facebook almost every now and then.

    Cheers!

  14. I think it's great that potential musicians can use the tool of new media to gain recognition. It is definitely much easier to get a handle on their skills as artistes through critique from viewers or listeners on the web (trolls aside)

I think the local music scene might actually have a chance to flourish more now! Case in point: the number of Singaporean artistes gaining fame on or through YouTube.

  15. It is fortunate to see that there are many forms of new media available for aspiring musicians to gain recognition.

Furthermore most of the aforementioned services are free or low cost.

  16. Sherwin.L : Yes the local music scene have a lot of chance to get known now. I'm sure you're a music junkie, and I'm sure you want the local scene to get recognize.

Jazzper : I agree. I'm sure that are more talents out there that are yet to be discovered; and having the services to be free or low cost really helps for those great unknown talents.

    Cheers!

  17. I dint know there are so many local bands at all until i get to see your blog. I dont think our country is doing enough to promote local music, even our radio station is only playing an hour per week for all our local talents.

New media is one goood way to promote music, as we can see from above. JingYuan

  18. I agree that comments made by listeners will be useful for artists' improvement, but I do really suggest having a personal partner who is good in music to help in the recording of their own music so as to ensure that they don't embarrass themselves on the first attempt.

BTW I really appreciate the opportunities offered by the New Media for our local music scene to gain attention around the world.

  19. seeing these many platforms and opportunities, are there other challenges people who would like to showcase their talents because of new media? other than trolls and negative input? - eileen

    ReplyDelete
  20. Jing Yuan : The local talents here in Singapore are slowly developing and growing. Let's show them support.

Ann : Yes I agree with you for the good recording process. I know of some great local bands out there who have had gone to local recording studios or professional home studios to get their song recorded. And yes! New Media is giving us young talents a lot of opportunities.

Eileen : Challenges? Yes, I think there are some. To name a few, some might not have the self-confidence to put up their music being afraid their singing is bad. Other than that, most local bands I know put their stuffs up to be shared.
You can check this guy out who does his own instrumental band. He's a talent.
    http://www.facebook.com/pages/Navire-Creux/126739407362021

Newmediascapes : I would recommend RootMusic to get our music profile started, and then post it onto our Facebook account to get people to start listening.
I have read and personally experience that Myspace is soon to be outdated. Almost everyone is using Facebook to share their stuffs and get connected.

    Cheers!

  21. Personally, I think that youtube is still the best platform for one to share their music or video covers at because youtube itself has a strong base of visitors per day and someone will eventually chance upon your video.

If it's good, their might even like it and support you, allowing you to gain more supporters in that way.
